Tucked away on Behrenstraße just a stone’s throw from the Brandenburg Gate, India Club Berlin is a destination that offers a wholly different kind of dining experience in the city’s Mitte district. Far from casual curry houses or quick take-outs, this restaurant presents Indian cuisine with considered refinement, a blend of tradition and modern European sensibilities, elevated by quality ingredients and precise execution.

Upon arrival, the interior strikes an immediate impression: dark mahogany wood panelling, rich colours and patterned fabrics create an atmosphere that manages to feel both elegant and warmly inviting. The décor carries a subtle vibrancy rather than loud ornamentation, with hints of Indian flair woven into an otherwise restrained fine-dining setting. There is a sense of occasion here, the kind of place where service feels intuitive and measured, and the space itself cues you to slow down and savour what’s to come.

Our evening began at the bar with two standout cocktails that set a spirited tone for the meal. The Masala Paloma, complete with Tequila, Passion Fruit Purée, Lemon Juice, Agave Syrup and Pink Grapefruit, was refreshing, zesty and slightly smoky, offering a perfect introduction to the evening. In contrast, the Bombay Heat, complete with Whisky, Campari, Vermouth (Antica Formula), Coconut Syrup and Spicy Ginger, provided a bolder, warming start with complex layers of spice and citrus that teased the palate. Both cocktails demonstrated intelligent craftsmanship and a thoughtful approach to pairing with the cuisine.

"India Club stands out as a compelling option that honours its roots while embracing contemporary sophistication."

For starters, the tandoori specialities immediately revealed the restaurant’s strengths. The Salmon Rajgira, complete with Salmon, Amaranth, Spinach, Cheese and Garlic, was tender and subtly smoky from the tandoor, with the amaranth adding an unexpected textural delight. Equally impressive was the Duck Purple Curry Potato Mash, complete with Duck, Purple Potato, Curry Powder, Cress, Honey and Mustard. The duck was rich and succulent, complemented beautifully by the earthy purple potato and aromatic curry flavours, each bite balanced by the hint of honey and mustard.

The main courses continued the journey with a strong showcase of flavour and technique. The Prawn Goan Curry, featuring Prawns, Coconut Milk, Clove and Tamarind, was aromatic yet light, allowing the fresh sweetness of the prawns to shine through while the coconut milk added gentle creaminess. The Black Dal, made from Beluga Lentils and Fenugreek Leaf, was velvety and deeply spiced, a testament to the subtle mastery of slow-cooked lentils. Accompanying sides of fluffy Basmati Rice and cooling Raita provided the perfect balance, cutting through the curry richness while complementing the deep flavours on the plate.

The meal was paired with a bottle of Trentangeli Castel del Monte 2020, a refined Italian wine whose gentle acidity and stone fruit notes lifted the spices and richness beautifully. The wine’s elegance enhanced each course without overpowering it, demonstrating the restaurant’s thoughtful approach to pairing fine Indian cuisine with international selections.

Dessert offered a final flourish. The Traditional Indian Kulfi, featuring Saffron, Basil Seeds and Cream, was dense yet creamy with fragrant, delicate flavours. The Kaffir Lime Crème Caramel, with Kaffir Lime Leaf, Egg and Caramel Sauce, provided a refreshing, citrusy counterpoint to the richness of the kulfi, finishing the meal on a sophisticated note.

Service throughout was professional and gracious, with staff who clearly appreciate the nuances of the menu and are comfortable guiding guests through dishes that may be unfamiliar. The pacing of the meal was deliberate, never rushed, and the atmosphere retained a relaxed elegance even as the restaurant filled.

India Club occasionally leans toward refinement over rustic authenticity, presenting dishes in a polished fine-dining style rather than street-food style, but this is very much part of the experience. The result is an elevated journey through Indian flavours, showcasing the chef’s precision, creativity and deep respect for tradition.

In a city where authentic Indian cuisine can be hard to find and often adapted to local tastes, India Club stands out as a compelling option that honours its roots while embracing contemporary sophistication. It is the perfect choice for a special evening, a memorable meal, or anyone wishing to experience North Indian cooking at its finest.
