The Bull and Last in Highgate is a perfect blend of historic charm and modern luxury, offering an unforgettable experience in one of London’s most picturesque neighbourhoods. Nestled close to Hampstead Heath, this historic pub has gained recognition not only for its top-notch cuisine but also for its beautifully designed accommodations. During our stay, we were fortunate to experience the enchanting Dido room, one of the seven bespoke bedrooms that make this venue truly stand out.

The Dido room, one of the larger options available, is a testament to The Bull and Last’s commitment to celebrating local heritage. Named in honour of Dido Belle, whose legacy is intertwined with nearby Kenwood House, the room pays homage to the historical fireplaces of the estate by preserving its own original fireplace. This feature serves as a focal point, offering both aesthetic appeal and a tangible connection to the area’s rich past.

The decor of the Dido room is a thoughtful reflection of its namesake’s story and artistic influences. The colour palette draws inspiration from the portrait work of David Martin, lending the space a sophisticated yet warm atmosphere. Meanwhile, the artwork by James Nunn, featuring Longhorn cattle, adds a charming touch. This nod to the cattle that once grazed on Hampstead Heath during Dido Belle’s lifetime ties the room to its surroundings in a meaningful way.

"Whether you’re here for the food, the accommodation, or both, this Highgate gem promises an experience that will stay with you long after your visit."

The room is both spacious and comfortable, with a king-sized bed dressed in premium linens, ensuring a restful night’s sleep. Modern conveniences such as a state-of-the-art bathroom with a rain shower, high-speed Wi-Fi, and smart technology enhance the experience, seamlessly blending old-world charm with contemporary comfort.

The Bull and Last’s location is ideal for those who want to explore the vibrant character of North London. Situated just a short walk from bustling Camden, guests can easily immerse themselves in the area’s eclectic culture, from its iconic market to its lively music scene.

On the other hand, nature lovers will relish the proximity to Hampstead Heath, a sprawling green oasis perfect for leisurely strolls or a refreshing dip in one of the famous lidos. If you’re feeling adventurous, don’t forget to pack your swimwear for a truly unique experience in London’s open-air swimming spots. The Heath also offers stunning views of the city skyline, making it a must-visit during your stay.

While this review focuses on the accommodations, it’s impossible not to mention the outstanding reputation of The Bull and Last’s restaurant. Though we’ll cover our dining experience in a separate review, suffice it to say that the food here is an essential part of the visit. Whether you’re enjoying a hearty breakfast or an indulgent evening meal, the menu showcases seasonal ingredients and creative culinary techniques. Paired with an extensive selection of wines and craft beers, dining at The Bull and Last is a true delight.

What sets The Bull and Last apart is the meticulous attention to detail evident in every aspect of its design. Each of the seven bedrooms has been individually curated, offering guests a unique experience steeped in character. From the Dido room’s historical and artistic elements to the luxurious amenities provided, it’s clear that great care has been taken to ensure a memorable stay.

The staff further enhance the experience with their warm hospitality and dedication to service. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with genuine smiles and made to feel completely at home. Whether offering local recommendations or ensuring our room was perfectly prepared, the team’s attentiveness left a lasting impression.

The Bull and Last is much more than a pub with rooms—it’s a destination that captures the essence of Highgate’s charm and history. The Dido room, with its thoughtful design and nods to local heritage, is a standout example of how the establishment combines tradition and modernity. Coupled with its prime location, exceptional dining, and outstanding service, this venue offers a one-of-a-kind experience that’s perfect for a relaxing getaway or an enriching city break.

For anyone seeking a blend of historical character, luxurious comfort, and access to both nature and urban attractions, The Bull and Last is a top choice. Whether you’re here for the food, the accommodation, or both, this Highgate gem promises an experience that will stay with you long after your visit.
