Set in the heart of Slovenia, surrounded by lush greenery and gently flowing water, Hotel Grad Otočec occupies one of the most remarkable locations. Approaching the property feels like stepping into a fairytale, as you cross a historic wooden bridge that leads you onto a small island where the castle stands proudly. Knowing that this is the only castle in Slovenia located on its own island makes the arrival even more memorable and adds an immediate sense of occasion.

The setting alone is breathtaking. The castle is wrapped by the Krka River, with tranquil water on all sides, mature trees framing the view and a sense of calm that feels worlds away from everyday life. It is peaceful without feeling remote, grand without feeling intimidating. There is a quiet magic to Otočec that is felt as soon as you step onto the island and it stays with you throughout your entire stay.

Hotel Grad Otočec carries a rich and fascinating history, with origins that date back to the Middle Ages. Over the centuries it has evolved from a defensive stronghold into the elegant castle hotel it is today, and that layered history is beautifully preserved. Stone walls, original architectural details and carefully restored interiors all tell the story of the building’s past, while modern comforts have been seamlessly introduced. The balance between heritage and luxury feels thoughtful and respectful, never forced.

"Hotel Grad Otočec is not just a place to stay, it is a destination in its own right."

The atmosphere inside the castle is welcoming. From check in onwards, the staff were consistently warm, attentive and genuinely friendly. There was a real sense that everyone took pride in the hotel and cared deeply about the experience of their guests.

The bar and restaurant are both highlights in their own right. The bar is an inviting space to relax, whether for a quiet pre dinner drink or a nightcap after a long evening. It has a cosy elegance that suits the castle setting perfectly and encourages you to slow down and enjoy the surroundings. The restaurant delivers a dining experience that reflects the quality of the hotel as a whole, with beautifully presented dishes that showcase local flavours and ingredients. Dining within the castle walls, with views out towards the water and gardens, feels special at any time of day and even more so in the evening.

One of the true stand out moments of our stay was having the pleasure of experiencing the Royal Suite. From the moment we entered, it was clear this was something extraordinary. The suite features its own entrance hall, immediately setting it apart and giving a sense of privacy and grandeur. Beyond this, the space opens into a huge reception room that feels both impressive and inviting, perfect for relaxing or simply taking in the character of the room.

The bedroom area is stunning, with generous proportions and an atmosphere that feels calm, elegant and indulgent. Natural light fills the space, highlighting the beautiful furnishings, all made from natural materials that add warmth and authenticity. Every piece feels carefully chosen and rich with character, enhancing the historic charm of the castle while remaining comfortable and luxurious.

The bathroom is equally impressive and was a real highlight. The corner whirlpool bath adds a touch of indulgence that feels perfectly suited to the setting. After a day of exploring or simply enjoying the hotel, soaking in the bath while surrounded by such unique architecture is an experience we will not forget. The entire suite feels cohesive and thoughtfully designed, with a sense of timelessness rather than modern excess.

What truly elevates Hotel Grad Otočec is how effortlessly it creates a sense of escape. Walking around the island, listening to the river and taking in the views from every angle is a pleasure in itself. Whether enjoying a leisurely breakfast, an afternoon drink or an evening stroll, the surroundings constantly remind you that this is a rare and special place.

Throughout our stay, the staff consistently enhanced the experience. From arrival to departure, every interaction was marked by kindness, professionalism and genuine hospitality. It is clear that guest experience is at the heart of what they do, and it shows in every detail.

Hotel Grad Otočec is not just a place to stay, it is a destination in its own right. Its incredible location, rich history, beautiful interiors and exceptional service combine to create an experience that feels both luxurious and deeply personal. Staying in a castle on its own island is something few places in the world can offer, and Otočec delivers it with grace and authenticity.

Our time here was truly memorable and one we will look back on with great fondness. For anyone seeking a unique, romantic or simply unforgettable stay in Slovenia, Hotel Grad Otočec is an absolute must.
